Blanket Dilemma!
October 17, 2006
Hi all!
I've been busily knitting away at college this last week, but been too busy in the evenings to blog about it! I have knitted the back and a front of the stripy cardi, and also saved a total of £28.80 on bus fares to go towards Kim Hargreaves hat kits - what a splendid effort!
In the evenings I've finished the knitting on the Artfibers blanket. While I was nearly at the end it felt like I was doing ENDLESS knitting (you know, like in that Spanish film!):

It is kind of this big:

I had initially decided to crochet around the edge, using some Debbie Bliss cashmerino superchunky, but it didn't look right and I had to rip it all out - I think it may have been too chunky. But that's not all - because I used many yarns which are of varying thicknesses, the edge of the blanket is wavy:

And I think crocheting around the edge only enhanced the waviness, which I didn't like.
So what should I do?! I could sew a fabric edge on I suppose, or just weave in all those ends and have a blanket without a properly finished edge? Or try the crochet again with a finer weight yarn?
Any ideas?

hey, nice blanket!!!!!....i would try to crochet it again with a finer yarn, at first the edge is going to look weird, but if you continue around the blanket it might look good....i had a problem like that with a poncho and went out ok...Buena Suerte! (good luck!)...Marce....

Wow - Reminds me of a blanket I got from Cancun. It had a wip-stitched cotton edge. Great job! Looks warm :)

Wow, good job on the blanket! Looking at it makes me want to snuggle up on the couch with a movie and hot chocolate!
Yeah, I can see how the edge has a wavy look to it....unfortunately, I'm not one for creative ideas. But try the edge with a finer gauge and maybe it will make the wavyness look like it was on purpose! ;-) Good luck!

I like it that way on the edges, give it character.
Maybe fringe if you'd like
I'm working on something simular. Forever knitting for sure. I knit 1 row with each differnt yarn, any yarn, any guage, weight or fiber leaving a 6-9 inch tail on each row for fringe
Good Luck! It looks great Love the colors you used too! keep up the good work! Enjoy! ;o)

I like the fringe idea, though I'd probably go for a fabric border (but then again I'm a bit obsessive compulsive about right angles). It's got a lot of character with the wavy edge, and I'm sure it'll end up looking gorgeous no matter what you go for.

Hmm, not sure what to do on the blanket. But what Spanish film were you referring to about endless knitting? Sounds like one I'd like to watch. My Blackberry is knitting up very nicely, BTW...

Like Water for Chocolate? Something magic-realist like that.
It's a very pretty blanket.

If they are wool or wool blend yarns you could try blocking....if not, I'd say fringe!

Yes that's the one - Like Water for Chocolate! She's knitting some kind of shawl or something and it is improbably long. I haven't seen it for years but that's definitely the film I meant.

How about knitting on i-cord to the edge. I did that on the only blanket I ever made and it's really simple and clean.

I like the fringe look and think it would look really good on this blanket. Or what about a lacey border along the wavy edge (something like the light blue row in your last picture)?

Blanket looks great, so snuggly. Loving the colours. Another suggestion- APPLIED I CORD. Probably only coming up with this one because I've just used it myself for a bag edging.

I'd say adding fringes to the strings that are already there. Easy enough, and I think it'd look nice. You could even downplay the waviness by making all the fringes even with each other on the outside edges (does that make sense? - I mean just taking scissors and cutting them all even with each other when you finish putting them on, instead of cutting them all the same length and then applying them to the blanket).

What a beautiful blanket, I'd love to make something like that but I think it would take me a thousand years! I love your site and am planning on making the pretty skirt you have in your free patterns.

I love the blanket! I'm not sure if this would work, but here's what I would try: use a variety of your stripey yarns to pick up and knit (as in a sweater neck edge). So, pick up and knit, like 50 stiches, then knit or rib an inch or so; bind off, and then try wrapping it around the uneven blanket edge. Sew the thing in place. If this works, I would keep adding chunks of color around the edge. Not sure how to connect the bits, but you're a smart girl!

i'm a newly converted fan to a sewn fabric binding - make a big bias binding with purpley-blue fabric and add to the 'patchwork' effect of different colours/textures.

I'd find a nice wide silky ribbon in a co-ordinating colour and sew that on as a casing for the edge - no end weaving required! I had a blanket as a kid and the smooth ribbon edge was my favourite bit...
