Reinvention!
November 13, 2006
I went shopping at the weekend, and got some more yarn - but only a teensy bit! I don't know if you remember but last year I had a pattern in Magknits called Coleen, it was a little cardi. You can see the pattern here, it's not a great photo (I didn't get any very good ones!). I always liked it but some pooey people online were so mean about it (and me!) I was put off submitting any more designs until very recently. Well, anyway, I decided if I gave the cardi a face lift I could see it back in a favourable light (silly? Maybe...).
So I ripped out the copper lurex shimmer edgings (which I have to admit didn't work as well with the grey-green as I intended) and got a ball of Kidsilk Night in a beautiful purple to use instead. I've already done about 50% of the new edgings! I also got a pretty button, which is a large thin pinky shell one. Look how much nicer the dark purple looks with the grey-green:

And here's the yarn with the button:

I think it will look pretty and give the cardi a new look! Also I will have lots of spare Kidsilk Night, so I'll probably make a flower with it to sew on the front. I love knitted/crocheted flowers!
I have also for a very long time wanted to make some knitted cakes (little fairy cakes with sprinkles and cherries on top). I googled for knitted cakes today because I was sure some other people must have had the same idea, and sure enough they did! There were even some very similar to what I had in my head....well I guess there is only a limited way little cakeys can look!! But that means I won't be submitting the pattern anywhere when I've finished, I don't want to look like I'm stealing ideas. So I'll put them here for free. But enough of that - here's the yarn:

It's Rowan 4-ply Soft - somewhat extravagant for toys I guess, but the colours were perfect! The biscuity colour is for the bottoms of the cakes, the creamy white and bubblegum pink are 2 sorts of icing, and the other one is, of course, chocolate! Mmmmmmm. I'm going to use little beads for sprinkles, and buy glassy red beads for cherries. I'm very pleased to have this yarn, since I've wanted to make cakes for AGES. Well, I'm working away for the rest of the week, so I'll be back at the weekend, bye for now!

The cardi will look great with the revamped border and button. The colour of the KSN is so lovely. Oh, and have fun with the cakes, I've always meant to make some of those.
Thanks also for your comment about the dress. I'm currently trying to sort it out, though it won't be ready in time for the concert. . .

Little lurker who has to just come out and say that I think that magknits design is WAY cute! Now I do think it will look even more fab with the KSN but I am a KS lover as it is so I am partial ;)
Yummy cakes making me wish I had a real one here!

Cool idea for the knitted cakes. they will make great pin cushions! Also, I think your updates to the cardiare going to look great. I'm surprised people were saying nasty stuff about - I think it's a cute cardi!

Well, I must say "pooey" to the poo-ers about the Mag Knits submission; however, if it does make you re-think your work and produce something even better -- then, perhaps a critique can be used productivly?

Just ignore people who say stupid things like that and are pooey - you can't please everyone all the time, so just please yourself, and only consider worrying about constructive comments instead of stupid people :)
It does look very tasty though with the new edging...

I was looking forward to see more of your designs on Magknits... Don't get bogged down by what mean people say online!
BTW, I think your Tapestry Cardigan is beautiful!

If the designers in the haute couture industry ever listened to all the people out there saying their stuff is crap, do you think they'd still be working?
Fashion is like religion in a way (people are sometimes slaves to both, though that's not the way I was thinking of): it's very personal for many people. And, what one person loves, another will hate. Just chalk it up to a difference in taste not a fault in your designs. I'm sure there were people out there who liked your cardigan just as much as others didn't. So, keep on designing things you'd love to wear and forget about whether someone else wouldn't want it.

Can't see why people poo pooed your cardi, it looks like a nice little cardi and I expect they get loads of submissions for something like magknits so you should be proud to be a published knit designer, just hold youe head up high, and 2 fingers up to them!

I knitted Colleen and I even had some at work make a special trip into my office to say that she liked it AND she asked for the pattern.
