Cakes count as crafts?
February 18, 2007
Last week was rubbish! Adam went away for the whole week (and still isn't back) and I was working a long drive away from home, so not much fun happened. I had drawn up a big list of crafty things I should do while he was away (involving finishing various projects, and getting the sewing machine out) - if I'd stuck to the list I would by now have sewn a jacket and some jeans, sewn an edging on my knitted blanket, knitted another little cake and written up the pattern for the Tapestry cardi! However what I forgot when I was making the list was that I am NOT superwoman, I am in fact a very tired person who just wants to sit around doing NOTHING after a long day out of the flat! Hence I have no crafts to show you.
But I have some cakes instead! As Adam was away I spent valentines day on my own eating pasta and pesto (no time to cook) and watching dvds, which was a bit sad, but I couldn't think of anyone who is single to hang out with. So this weekend I made a cake for Adam as a late valentines day present, it is a plum cake and has golden icing sugar on top, which tastes really nice and looks better than white icing (on this cake anyway):

I made it at my parents house and transported it back, and I should have left the icing until I got home, because it got bashed and I had to redo some of it, and I didn't do a great job because you can kind of see, but never mind.
I also made some muffins! I made peanut butter and snickers muffins:

And also banana muffins (they are the darker ones in the tin):

All these things are from Nigella Lawson's Domestic Goddess book. I took the muffins to work, apparently you have to buy cakes for everyone when you pass important exams, which sounds ridiculous to me, but I like baking so I made some instead. I think people liked them, I hope so anyway!
Maybe there will be knitting next time!

I definitely think cakes should count as crafts! You certainly did tons of baking:) I have a forthcoming cake post myself. It's been so cold lately - it's perfect baking weather.

Ditto to Sarah's comments. I love love love peanut butter and I also love love love Snickers. What a great combo in a muffin! And I simply adore Nigella Lawson. She's a kitchen angel in my book because she sticks to delicious, yummy stuff :)

and well done for passing important exams!

I know how you feel. I'm always making lists of things I need to do during the weekend, but then I find that I'm completely wasted from a whole week trying to explain important concepts and get students to do their homework.
Those muffins look lovely! I'm almost sad to be celiac.

I know exactly what you mean! Mr. Pieknits was just gone a week too, and I alawys think well at least I can get a bunch of stuff done. And then somehow I never do.

Just wanted to say - Congratulations on passing the exams. (You know, you are now just cheap labour for the firm until you get out of contract!!)
The muffins look yummy! Must try the PB and Snickers combination.

You are so amazingly fast at knitting. I have a jumper that I'm working on that's been sitting in a basket on my floor for about a month. In the same amount of time my jumper has been sedentary, you probably have made several large project!
Amazing.

I need need need Nigella Lawson's Domestic Goddess Cookbook! Everything she makes looks so yummy. I miss her and her tellyness. Maybe I shall see if it is in my local library (I can't justify buying any more cookbooks when I don't even have my own kitchen!).
Cooking is a craft, I think anything which involves working with our hands is really. Hmm, but then that includes lots of other things too like driving. Hmm, hold on...
Definition of craft:
Skill in doing or making something, as in the arts; proficiency.
To make by hand.
So there you have it!
