Back in the UK!
June 11, 2007
The last 3 weeks went far too fast! Adam and I had a fantastic time in China, we managed to visit a lot of places and see lots of great things. I'm writing this at 5:30 in the morning, because I woke up an hour ago and was too hungry to go back to sleep!
I thought I'd try something new with the photos this time, and link to my facebook album - it took me about 2 hours to pick 60 photos to upload and I don't have the energy to narrow those down to 10 or so, resize them and put them on this blog! If you are interested, you can see the photos here. We went to Shanghai, Chengdu, Xian, Datong, Beijing, Nanjing and Hangzhou - and we think there are probably another 3 trips to make before we visit all the places we wanted - it's an enormous country!
As for knitting, I managed to design and knit a simple eyelet tank from the Blue Sky Alpacas cotton, and crochet most of an enormous ruffley pink fluffy scarf - that is the most holiday knitting ever! And I only really knitted on trains and planes. I'll show those things off next time, now I suppose I'd better get up properly!

Oh darn, I can't view the photos while at work...I'll have to wait until I get home. I'm sure they are amazing though. Did you go see the Great Wall? That is one place in China that I've always wanted to see.
Glad you had a great time!

You take some pretty damned good photos - I particularly like the somewhat baffling but exciting-looking Bund tunnel! And I just thought I'd mention that the red tokens at the Dongye temple are prayer offerings. You can buy them to hang in front of a god whose specific 'speciality' you wish to appeal to. (Though as far as I can recall an awful lot of people just hang them on random railings; maybe there is an almighty - but, alas, invisible - Railing God?)

What a wonderful holiday, and great photos! I have a Chinese friend at college who always comes back from China with the coolest fashions, not what I expected at all. Did you do any clothes shopping? Did you see any "local" knitting while there?

Hi! I wanted to comment on your sweater - an easier way to knit sleeves in the round without dpn's is to do the magic loop - use one long circular needle (or use two shorter ones). I make socks that way.

Look at that light tunnel¬

Thanks for sharing your photos. They were amazing. I never really had any urge to visit China but now I've changed my mind! Can't wait to see the tank you designed.

Thanks for sharing the photos. Simply wonderful! Took me back to my world travels - 20 years ago now, but experiences I'll never forget. I made your Mr Stegs (now simply called "Steg") earlier this year. He was a big hit with my boyfriend. I'm now on the second sleeve of Caroline and loving it, although it will be much too hot to wear it in Arizona until the fall arrives. Thanks for all your great patterns.

That, of course, is your Carolyn pattern, not Caroline!
