Rowan 43

February 09, 2008

Here's my "review" of Rowan magazine 43! I always buy the Rowan magazines no matter what, I think I started on 28 and have all of them up from there onwards. My least favourite ever was definitely 39 (wack pirate styling), but I think that this one might come a close second!

It's not horrible, at all, but definitely a bit blah. I always think that a bit about the summer ones anyway, but I think this one was particularly so. Also, there seemed to be less in it compared to usual. Only the 3 main sections, and no other bits and bobs inbetween.

Here are the things I liked:

Gabi:

It's really pretty, but I'm not sure I would make it, because all those squillions of wide rows of lace might drive me mad.

Geno:

This is the only design I think I will actually make (if I have time! But I genuinely would like to). It's so pretty, and wearable, and I love 4 ply cotton. Good job!

Granite:

This is a very nice shape but might be too much st st to actually stomach making it!

There are a couple of other things I think are very wearable, but those ar the main contenders. Now! Here are the things I don't like!

Gauze:

This is some crazy spiderman shit right here. I am drawn to the crazyness, but I don't think it works. Sorry.

Chevelle:

Catalina:

Those are both boxy, unflattering, and the kind of thing you might dress a child in. The first one is also too colourful. Apologies to anyone who is busily making either of them!

And that's about it! What do you guys think? And do you all think I should make Geno as well?

I agree with your comments. This n43 is quite blah. I like a lot the KSH lacy top though - eerie. The part with the colourfull ones you've highlighted is indeed, very blah :-). Lets hope next one will be thicker, fuller of patterns we want to knit! I understood that because of the 30 years of Rowan's, there will be an extra full magazine with the n44...

I'd make Geno in a different colour to white - any other colour! I haven't seen the new Rowan yet but I've given the last couple of mags a wide berth. I agree about summer knitting anyway, it isn't really my thing. I much prefer winter issues. And those crochet items are ghastly! Very granny-eighties. I did like Gauze though... Polly x x x

p.s. Rowan mags used to have smaller projects included, like little bags, or placemats or even a frog to sew, but recent mags only seem to have large, expensive projects included. I really liked the little side projects and think they should include those again.

Geno is cute!

I am in total agreement with you. There is a cotton 4ply cardi I might make (one at the beginning, very plain) if only because I have the yarn for it. I really like Granite too, but while I'd be happy with the st st, I'm not convinced I could get away with wearing it... The crochet section is officially hideous though. That poor model! She looks reall strained all the way through that bit!

Gabi is beautiful, but could be a bit distressing to knit ;) But go for it if you like it! You've got to like something from this issue, and if there isn't much, Gabi is definitely one to consider to keep you going till they release something decent... ;)

Exactly Polly! Where are the little bags? Where are the fancy edgings? Where are the cool things you can do with Rowan denim and a bottle of bleach? Where are the fun reconstruction projects? Boo!

Yeah, this issue is lame!! Maybe they're saving it all up for the 30th anniversary issue?

I did like Erika Knight's little cardi with cool waist shaping and a rough fabric edging. Eh.

I definitely agree with you....who would wear stuff that is so unflattering!
But I do love Geno a lot! very feminine and would go with so many outfits!

Geno is great, and I loved your review. Especially the part about the missing bits in between, that is nearly my favorite part of Rowan magazine!! Also, until you mentioned it, I didn't realize those crazy spiderwebs were actually ATTACHED to the sweater. Yikes.

OMG I thought she was sitting in a hammock!

I almost snorted red wine out of my nose when I came to those last three pix. UGH indeed. Well they can't all be fabulous, though your choice is the pick of the litter.

Posted by: sil at February 11, 2008 04:11 AM

Oh my Lord! The last two are hideous! I didn't think the other one was too bad until I looked at it again and then finally saw the "spiderman" part, yup not working at all!

I wasn't bowled over by the mag either. Most are unflattering. What's with the web-wings???
Geno is nice, go for it!

Eek. Spiders don't exactly float my boat... Actually, of the designs you posted, I think *all* of them except Geno are hideous - just varying degrees of hideous! Good job you posted them, because I won't even waste time looking at this mag now.

I can't say I like the latest Rowan. For a while they had a few mags that were "out there" and then there was a return to more conventional patterns. The patterns in this one are a bit blah, and I think they could've done better with the crochet pieces. Not very wearable, not even by the model!

Geno, however, is quite pretty. Go knit it!

Chevelle-Gag! You are so right.

I totally agree, i have to say i was really disappointed with this issue. I always look forward to the new rowan mag coming out and pour over it for months, but iv lost interest already! not enough content n not good enough content. not up to rowan standards!

Welcome back! I don't comment often, but I have missed reading your blog and your knitting. While I understand the lull, I get that way myself, too often, I'm glad you're back.

I was quite looking forward to the new Rowan magazine, but, as everyone else, I was thoroughly disappointed. Well said Polly about the lack of the smaller, fun projects. I think the patterns that appeal to me the most are Ether and Geno. I definitely expected more, though.

Hi, I liked your website. Beautiful works. You're very special. Congratlations!! Kisses from Brazil!

Hi Jen,
Am so impressed with all your patterns (and the sheer volume of your knitting!) :) I'm about to start knitting your pattern for Blackberry - the brooch front closure sweater with chunky ribbed border and bobbles on the sleeve. My sister and I are both impressed - and she is looking forward to her birthday present. :)
On an earlier entry, you have several scarves knitted on the diagonal - how do you do this?? It looks really cool.

Cheers
Gwen
