Wedding Dress Fabric!
October 15, 2008
I don't really want to show off my wedding dress until after the event, as guests might be looking! But I can't resist, so I will show sneaky peeks etc. as I go.
I made a practice dress a while ago, and in spite of measuring myself and the dress pattern loads of times, and following the instruction on how tight it was supposed to be to the letter, it somehow ended up being horridly tight around my lower ribcage! I managed to let it out so it is ok, and I am just going to cut the real thing 1.5cm away from the pattern, so I can take it in as required (I am worried the real thing will be even tighter with stiffer fabric and lining).
Anyway, we were in London a couple of weeks ago and I went to some silk shops, so get samples of fabric for the Real Dress.
And here they are!
The lady in the shop was so helpful! I just told her I wanted something that was
1. Not bright white
2. Not too heavy, but quite stiff.
And she found loads that were great, and wrote down the widths and prices for me.
My absolute favourite is the middle one here:
It is in a shade called "Blush" and I love it! It's not a sickly sweet pink - more like a vintage pink, and still pale enough that it's obviously a bride's dress.
I was so excited after we got the samples, that I dreamed about the dress for 2 entire nights! Luckily now I've calmed down. I just have a few finishing touches to the practice dress and then I can work out exactly how much fabric I need! I might even make the bridesmaid dresses as well, we haven't decided yet.
I will show off invitiations soon, and you never know, maybe some knitting! I love how my knitting blog hasn't seen any in a year!

You are so talented! I only made my wrap for my wedding, and that freaked me out enough! The colour is beautiful, it does look vintage-y. I love weddings... *sigh*

Oooh, such a pretty fabric choice! That will be a wonderful color with your coloring. Very flattering. The fabric looks like a crepe backed satin, which is so gorgeous to work with. It'll be amazing (of course).

Great fabric! That's definitely the best choice out of the selection you have there. Do you know what colour the bridesmaids dresses will be?!

I like the blush color fabric also. Before you buy it you might want to hold up the bolt of fabric next to your face in front of a mirror to make sure it compliments your complexion. Some brides complexions will look washed them out in that color.
Also check to see if the fabric holds wrinkles, because wrinkles can detract from a dress and show up in your wedding pictures.

What lovely fabrics! I wouldn't be able to make up my mind! When I got married, we were on a very tight budget, and my dressmaking skills were so limited. So I didn't have a proper dress, and I regret this choice now when I look at my photos. I'm sure you'll be glad you made a lovely dress. Do hope you'll post a pic of the finished dress on your blog eventually, after the big event, so I can sigh over it. What month is it anyway?
